Clarissa on the matter of berets.

Sonia commented yesterday that it was a pity Clarissa was not available to model the Slouchy Beret. I mentioned this to Clarissa last night and she wished to make the following statement: ‘Never will I be seen wearing the beret. The beret is for the man. Any hat which can fit in a pocket is not a hat that a well-dressed woman should wear.’

‘This,’ she said, ‘Is the hat for me’:

‘In fact,’ she continued, ‘It would have been me modelling that hat on the cover of Elegance: The Seeberger Brothers and the Birth of Fashion but I just couldn’t find a minute to give them. Vogue was taking every moment I had at the time. You remember that, don’t you?’ I did indeed. Vogue had decided to do an issue which had outer space as the theme. Who else but Clarissa would have been called in to advise on that topic? It is, however, a story for another day.
