Coffee and cigarettes

Well, tea for me, but nonetheless…

Watched Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes for the second time last night. The first time it hadn’t occurred to me that on top of whatever else it might be, it is a historical record of a world that will never exist again. Not even here in Geneva where cigarettes are met with, if not actual approbation, then nothing like the prevailing Anglo-Saxon attitude.

Coffee and cigarettes, it was a way of life. Now we are far more concerned with the fact of staying alive than the way in which we do it.

Oh, I especially loved Iggy Pop and Tom Waits, talking themselves into the idea that because they’d given up cigarettes it was okay to have one now. Perfect depiction of the addict’s logic.

I’m a big fan of Jim Jarmusch and if you haven’t seen this one before, try getting hold of it…I’d love to know what you think.
